Daybreakers

Daybreakers

Summary. In the near future, vampires have completely taken over the world, and a tiny human population survives to feed the whole vampire population. Many vampires are mutating into hideous bat like creatures. These savage monsters are so thirsty for blood, they attack other vampires to feed. Researchers are frantically looking for a human blood substitute that will enable the vampires to feed and survive without killing humans. One fateful night however, a group of strangers presents a self-loathing vampire scientist another alternative. This group holds the key to turn vampires human again.

Review ***

Daybreakers is a unique and eerie film, which is worth watching. Ethan Hawke plays the part of a gloomy, self-loathing vampire scientist well. The real treat however, is to see Sam Neil (Jurassic Park, In the Mouth of Madness) play an evil vampire executive. Neil steals the show hands down. William Defaoe is excellent as always, and plays a tough as nails human hero in this film. The special effects are first rate. I recommend it for fans of bizarre and dark films such as Dark City, The Matrix, and The Dark Crystal. Vampire fans, or course, will be pleased. Overall, the film is not spectacular, but is quite entertaining.
