Review Jennifer's Body
So, being that I am shameless I saw Jennifer's Body this afternoon after a hard's week work in the computer lab. I was expecting a trashy teen horror movie with some redeeming qualities, and I was sincerely impressed. Okay, this is the guy that will defend to the death the first Conan as an amazingly complex and unappreciated film, but it was better than I thought it’d be. Sure, the film certainly capitalizes on violence and sex, but there is an engaging storyline and surprisingly good acting. The editing of the film is shockingly brilliant, as is some of the cinematography. Jennifer's Body creates visual metaphors about sexual manipulation and the pugilistic nature of human society many times thought the film. One key example is the juxtaposition of two radically different scenes together. When Jennifer is seducing one of her victims, the film cuts back to a tender and naive lovemaking scene among two other characters in the film. Jennifer was a victim of awfully cruel sexual manipulation as a human, and uses such devices to lure her victims as a demon. The role that an indie rock band plays in the movie is wildly intelligent if you are willing to look past the surface. What makes Jennifer's Body entertaining however is that it does the above without ever losing sight of the fact that it is a campy teen monster movie, made for fun. Tragically, some will hate or dismiss this little gem initially because it is such a film, and others will not appreciate it past the sexy, scary, "popcorn flick" it ultimately is. The film was a little sad for me at times, but I don't want to give it away. Jennifer's body is a film full of base fun, but with more brain than usual. It's not likely to let horror fans down (or Megan fox fans, no disappointments there) but it might surprise open minded viewers who are not typical horror fans. Hopefully, we'll get to see Megan as the hero again soon. Kudos to her being the monster though, she did her role better than I thought she would, as did the supporting cast.
