Knowing
Knowing starring Nicholas Cage is available now if you have cable's On Demand service . I'd wager it is probably available from video stores, and by mail DVD services as well. I checked it out this weekend, and it is was worth the rental. It is a very different kind of suspense thriller, with an ending that was kind of awkward. Can't say it didn't make sense.....but I was put in the mood for a different kind of movie. Through the films marketing, and constant use of the Horror genre's conventions (scary dark house, etc) I was more prepared for a suspense/horror movie. The movie is suspenseful, and carries many of horror's genre conventions, but also heavily uses religious themes and imagery. The source of many of film's bizarre happenings and creatures are left shrouded in mystery. If this appeals to you; you may really like it. If you are a sucker for pseduo scientific or supernatural explanations like me, and want imaginary things accounted for with deliciously outlandish explanations, you'll be disappointed a bit. The plot revolves around a psychic little girl who in the fifties places a bizarre sequence of numbers in a time capsule. The time capsule is dug up in our time, and quizzically the contents are given out to students (nice gesture, but anyone heard of a museum)? A young boy with a Cosmologist father (Nicholas Cage) receives the set of numbers, which locates by precise date, location, and body count history's worst disasters, leading up to an apocalyptic event. Interesting flick, but to me some of the films "mystery" just seems sloppy, and so does some of the storyline. The extraordinary events of the film just happen, no reason is given for them. Perhaps it was left open for the viewer to explain them in their own way. It is atmospheric and scary, Cage is great for the role, and the concept is intriguing. Parts of the film, especially the ending, are downright touching. It's worth the rental fee. I was glad I gave it a chance; not the best thing I've seen.
