Tampa Theatre Updates-Fall 2010

Wow, just saw Metroplis last night at Tampa Theatre. To say that it was a treat, would be a vast understatement. The live organ music was superb, and the Tampa Theare's ambiance only augmented an already great film. The restored 35 mm print featured a half hour of footage that was presiously never seen. This lost footage was discovered in Buenos Aires in 2008. Hopefully, I can get some pictures of the event up soon, if a buddy let's me publish his photos.

Metropolis is one the first noteworthy science fiction films, but is much more complex than most of it's cinematic grandchildren. The film is essentially a story of class warfare, set in a distant, grim future where the labor class lives in an underground city, and the professional burgeiouis class lives in cloud city. The son of the wealhiest buisnes man in Metropolis becomes captivated by a beautiful female social activist, and begins to be dissatisfied with the social norms in Metropolis. About the same time, the city's resident mad scientist has succesfully invented an android that can look just like a human. A great adventure ensues that is not to be missed, even by the most pedestrian film viewer (silent movies, you like those?) This is definitely one of my favorite silent films. Just to get more of the petty cash, my absolute favorite in the silent era in coming in October.

October 24, Tampa Theatre will be showing "The Phamtom of the Opera" with live organ music. I will sorely miss this event if I have to work but alas, I may have to. Everyone else must enjoy this masterpiece among the gothic gargoyles of the Tampa Theatre. I'd almost live off peanuts to get a chance to see The Phantom of the Opera at the Tampa Theatre! The silent 1925 classic was meant to be seen in such a setting!
