Several news sources have indicated that Marvel has been bought by Disney. The deal still has to be approved by Marvel Shareholders, however. A little speculation on what would happen if this goes through. Obviously, this would give Disney access to their intellectual property and thus yield more money for shareholders. The ramifications of this for fans are debatable. On one end, nothing negative might happen. Disney really knows their stuff as far as marketing and business is concerned, and may be able to manage the brand well. Disney's brand and Marvel's brand, however, are worlds apart. According to a CNN's article Barclays Capital analyst Anthony DiClemente joked that Spider-Man will appear in 'A Bug's Life' sequel . It was just a joke; not an announcement but it's scary. A cameo might be funny, and I hope that was what Mr.DiClemente was joking about. Disney is about being cute and family oriented. It works incredibly well for them. Marvel is slightly more of a niche market. Minus a handful, some of the best known and loved superheroes come from the marvel universe. Marvel is about heroes, villains, and action adventure. Like Disney, Marvel's universe is also geared for the young and young at heart, with timeless characters and stories that are immortal to fans. If Disney leaves the brand alone, it will be fine. However, Disney's audience is not Marvel's audience. The same CNN report indicated that this was part of the rationale behind the purchase. Hopefully, Disney will not worry about the superhero movies being to violent and edgy for their brand. Hopefully, they can keep the brands separate. Maybe some outstanding animated work will come out of Pixar about a marvel character, some have started to speculate about such things already. I'll have to think about this one, and post more thoughts later.
